A sign that we’re needed. Successful. Important… Driven.

At some point, we’ve quietly started measuring the value of our lives by how full our calendars became. But I wonder, what if being productive and living with purpose aren’t the same thing at all?

We Don’t Just Learn to Work Hard. We Learn What Hard Work Means.

As children, very few of us consciously decide that our worth depends on what we achieve, yet many of us grow up absorbing messages that quietly shape that belief.

Perhaps we were praised for being helpful or rewarded for working hard. Maybe we were admired for succeeding, or perhaps we learnt that achievement became the safest place to hide. A way of proving we were enough.

Psychology tells us that the beliefs we form early in life become the lens through which we interpret the world. If love, approval or safety felt connected to what we did rather than simply who we were, it’s understandable that many of us continue chasing achievement long into adulthood.

Without realising it, productivity becomes more than something we do, it becomes who we believe we are.

Why Slowing Down Can Feel So Uncomfortable

One of the things I find most fascinating is that many women don’t actually struggle to work hard. They struggle to stop.

They tell themselves they’ll rest after the next deadline, the next promotion, the next milestone or the next achievement. Yet when the to-do list finally becomes shorter, another one quietly appears. And quickly.

Why?

Because our nervous system associates familiarity with safety. If we’ve spent years living at full speed, slowing down can feel strangely unsettling, not because rest is dangerous, but because it feels unfamiliar.

The body doesn’t always distinguish between what is harmful and what is simply new. Therefore rest can feel uncomfortable long before it feels restorative.

Productivity Can Become Emotional Protection

This is where things become interesting.

Sometimes productivity isn’t really about getting things done. Sometimes it’s about avoiding what happens when we stop.

If I keep moving, I don’t have to feel.

If I keep achieving, I don’t have to question whether I’m enough.

If I stay busy, I don’t have to sit with uncertainty.

Our brains are constantly trying to reduce discomfort. They naturally look for behaviours that create certainty, control or reward. Crossing another task off the list gives us a small burst of satisfaction, making productivity feel emotionally regulating in the short term, even if it quietly exhausts us over time.

That’s not laziness. That’s not weakness. It’s human.

I Recognise This In Myself

Building Becoming Her has been one of the most expansive things I’ve ever done.

It’s revealed things about myself that I didn’t expect. There are days when I catch myself believing that if I just write one more article, answer one more email, perfect one more Instagram post, then I’ll finally feel caught up.

Finally feel enough.

The truth is, there will always be another article to write. Another idea, another opportunity, another improvement or tweak to make. I’ve realised that the work never truly ends.

Which means if I don’t consciously decide what is enough, my nervous system will happily convince me that I should keep proving myself forever.

For me, purpose isn’t found in doing more, it’s found in remembering why I started.

Purpose Gives Direction. Productivity Provides Movement.

There is nothing wrong with productivity. Productivity builds businesses. It raises families, creates art or solves problems. The problem begins when productivity becomes our purpose.

Purpose gives direction. Productivity provides movement.

We need both, but in the right order, otherwise we become incredibly efficient at climbing a ladder we never truly wanted to climb. It’s entirely possible to spend years moving forwards while quietly travelling in the wrong direction.

When productivity comes before purpose, we often become reactive rather than intentional. We fill our diaries before asking whether the things inside them actually reflect the life we want to live.

We confuse momentum with meaning because standing still long enough to ask deeper questions can feel incredibly uncomfortable.

A woman can achieve extraordinary things while quietly feeling disconnected from herself. Equally, she can have a slower season that transforms her life more profoundly than any promotion ever could.

Purpose isn’t measured by output, it’s measured by alignment.

Perhaps We’ve Been Measuring The Wrong Thing

Maybe the most successful life isn’t the busiest one.

Maybe it’s the one that still leaves room to notice your children laughing. To have conversations that aren’t rushed. To sit with a cup of tea without feeling guilty. To create because you feel called to, not because you’re trying to earn your place in the world.

Physiologically, moments of genuine rest, connection and presence help signal safety to the nervous system. Over time, these experiences gently teach the body that worth doesn’t have to be earned through constant effort.

They remind us that we are allowed to exist, not just produce. And that feels quietly revolutionary in a culture that celebrates constant optimisation.

The Question I’m Learning To Ask

When I notice myself rushing from one task to the next, I’ve stopped asking, ‘How can I get more done?’

Instead, I ask, ‘What am I hoping productivity will give me today?’

Sometimes the answer is certainty. Sometimes it’s validation. Sometimes it’s distraction.

And sometimes, it’s genuinely purpose.

Learning the difference has changed the way I work and perhaps it can change the way we live. Perhaps purpose isn’t something we find once we’ve done enough, perhaps purpose is what decides what is worth doing in the first place.

Because productivity without purpose can leave us exhausted. But productivity in service of purpose, that is where meaningful lives are built.

Continue the conversation in the next chapter.

With warmth,

Becky

Founder, Becoming Her

We live in a world that celebrates busy.
